Full Abstract: Mouthpiece pressure and movement of the teeth during brass playing were measured via strain gauges placed inside and outside the mouths of ten players of the trumpet, horn, tenor bugle, and tuba. Mouthpiece pressure varies by instrument, depends upon the pitch of the note being played, and is not uniformly spread across the four incisors. Tooth movement may reach the physiological limits of dental mobility. It is recommended that removable supports be worn during performance to help stabilize teeth.
